Advocacy Information

The Advocacy Goal for SVPTA is to inform and mobilize members and the public to advocate for the education, health, safety and well-being of all children.

Here are somethings you can do to educate yourself and your unit about current issues:
  • Attend Fourth District Training:  On September 30, 2016, Fourth District is providing a free training for PTA members in Orange County.  Since Fourth District has one of the best Advocacy teams in California, this is a training you don’t want to miss.  Sign up at http://www.fourthdistrictpta.org/advocacy-training/ .    In addition, Fourth District will also be providing forums throughout the year to keep you up to date on legislative issues.  Here is a link to the latest Advocacy Communicator. http://www.fourthdistrictpta.org/advocacy-communicator/
  •  If you are signed up under PTAEZ as President or as  Advocacy/Legislative Chair, you should receive these monthly.
  • Attend SVUSD Board of Education meetings:  School board meetings are generally held on the second Thursday of the month at 6PM in the Education Center Board Room.  Last month the School Board discussed the effect the charter school had on enrollment in our district, possible changes to non-contiguous attendance areas and a resolution by the Board regarding Proposition 55.   You or someone from your unit should attend these meeting monthly to keep up to date on items that could affect your school.  The next meeting is October 20, 2016.
  • Attend the SVPTA Candidate Forum:  On October 26, 2016 at 7:00PM the SVPTA is holding a candidate forum for the election of new Board members to SVUSD Board of Education.  This is a great opportunity for you as well as the members at your school to ask questions, and get answers directly from the candidates. I have attached a flyer for this event that you can forward to your members.
  • Attend Sacramento Safari:  On February 27-28, 2017, Fourth District is leading a trip to Sacramento for units in Orange County.  At this event, you will be trained on current legislative issues and will meet with your local legislator to discuss current issues. Your unit should budget and approve $650 to send at least one representative.  Look for more information from Fourth District in the coming months. • Take the free online course Ed100.org:  Ed100 is a free, self-paced online course that prepares you to make a difference in your school or school district. California's education system is complex and changing fast. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a community member, Ed100 helps you learn what you need to know to be informed, credible and ready for action. Each lesson takes about 5 minutes, in English or in Spanish.  Go to Ed100.org for more information.
